DC drives can be very simple devices, or multifunctional devices comparable to inverters.
To chose the correct unit; you need one that is rated at least the same current as your motor, will run from your supply and has the required quadrants.
A single quadrant drive provides speed control in one direction only, no braking. Two quadrant drives give control in forwards and reverse, or one direction and regenerative braking. A four quadrant drive runs in both directions and also provides regenerative braking in both.
